Acadia National Park

In the summer of 2021, we drove 8 hours from NYC to Acadia National Park in Maine to camp with a one year old baby. In hindsight, this sounds like the worst idea but to this day it is one of our favorite trips we’ve ever taken with Dean. Acadia is STUNNING. Set on the coast of Maine, it has mountains, forest, coastline, lakes, - everything! And of course there are trails and windy roads that run through it all for you to explore. In addition to all the natural beauty, Mount Desert Island (where Acadia is mostly located) also boasts Bar Harbor- an adorable town you must see while you’re in Acadia.

We stayed at Under Canvas, the same “glamping” company we stayed with in Zion National Park a few years ago (and Yellowstone this year). We loved our experience there and the camp ground at Acadia was perfect for kids. The grounds are waterfront with a small rock beach that was a fun place for Dean to explore in the mornings and evenings when we weren’t in the park. They have a full service kitchen and bar, live music, games, and smores in the evenings and virtually anything you could ever need while “camping”. The whole Under Canvas experience was magical to say the least and I highly recommend staying there if you visit Acadia.

Below I’ll list the highlights of the park that we saw…keep in mind we did all the child friendly hikes and look outs so if you’re looking for something more challenging, I would ask google for recommendations.

Activities

Eats & Treats

Must Have: Jordan Pond House Restaurant

Lobster Rolls: Abel’s Lobster, Thurston’s Lobster Pound

Any meal: Side Street Cafe

Cafe: Lompoc Cafe, Coffee Hound

Dessert: Mount Dessert Bakery

Tips

- Rent a car if you fly to Maine, you’ll definitely need one to explore the park

- Reserve a car pass to drive Cadillac Summit Road as soon as you book your trip, they are cheap but spots fill up fast

- Download an offline map of Acadia on google maps before the trip so that you can navigate around the park without phone service (because there definitely won’t be any)

- If you can, visit in September or early October when the crowds are gone and the weather is the perfect
